Trump lawyers want confidential materials case delayed.

Former President Donald Trump and his classified documents co-defendants' lawyers want a trial date delayed.

Trump's lawyers said in a Friday filing that Judge Aileen Cannon should halt the 70-day trial date window that begins on May 20 to allow the defendants' counsel to review any more prosecutors' materials.

"Discovery remains far from complete in this case," lawyers argued in the motion. "Defendants have sought countless additional records from the Special Counsel’s Office and have requested evidentiary and non-evidentiary hearings that may well result in the production of additional voluminous, and potentially classified, discovery."

Trump's lawyers said this delay would give all parties more time to evaluate and resolve their pretrial motions before the judge.

"Time would also continue to be tolled under the Speedy Trial Act while the Court considers the numerous pretrial motions still pending," added the brief.

On Tuesday, Cannon asked Trump's lawyers to file a motion by Friday for the report to "include Defendants' positions on all excludable time from the speedy trial period and expressly indicate any Defendants' current assertion or waiver of speedy trial rights, with associated timeframes."

Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg said Cannon's Tuesday motion makes it “even clearer” that the Mar-a-Lago documents case “was never going to trial before the election.”

Former Democratic state senator Aronberg said, “she has always given the defense the benefit of the doubt and great deference on scheduling.” A secret papers complaint was brought against Trump, his adviser Walt Nauta, and Carlos de Oliveira, Trump's Mar-a-Lago maintenance supervisor.

Prosecutors say Trump hid confidential information at the property after his administration, violating the Presidential Records Act. Trump, Nauta, and de Oliveira deny culpability.
